As a self-published author, you need to know how to write an effective book marketing plan that will help you market and sell your book.
A book marketing plan contains at least eight sections. The first section, the Overview, sets the tone for your entire book marketing plan. Let’s discuss why the Overview is important and steps you can follow to write an Overview like a pro.
Purpose of the Overview
The Overview describes the Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How of your book. It should be brief, but provide a clear understanding of what the book is about, who you are, why you wrote the book, the audience, the format of the book, and where it will be sold. It sounds like a lot of information, but you’ll need to keep it concise. A good overview can be roughly 10-12 sentences long.
When creating your Overview, write the following:
1. Brief description of your book
2. Your name, title, and/or affiliations
3. Why you wrote the book
4. Your reader
5. Publication date
6. Book format
7. Where your book will be sold
Compile what you wrote and ask someone else to read it for clarity. You will refer to the Overview as you complete other sections of your book marketing plan. You’ll also use it when developing marketing materials such as your press release, tip-sheets, and more.
You're now ready to move on to the next section of your book marketing plan: Your Target Audience.
